Meanwhile, the interference method is known to be one of the most sensitive ways to measure the index, and it has been reported that the resolution of the salinity measurement (0.0007 g/kg) is better than that of the V-block refractometer 17, although the sensor has not yet been put to practical use. ![]() In fact, a double-prism V-block refractometer was tested at sea and made commercially available as an absolute salinity sensor 16, although the pressure resistance (20 MPa) and the resolution of the salinity measurement (0.001 g/kg) are not adequate to detect decadal-time-scale salinity change in the deep ocean. Interest in the refractive index-based measurement of density (or absolute salinity) has revived because it could help resolve these problems 15. Moreover, absolute salinity, which is needed to calculate the density of seawater from conventional conductance-based salinity measurements with a correction algorithm that uses the global atlas of silicate concentrations in the International Thermodynamic Equation of Seawater 2010 (TEOS-10) 11, has problems such as the latitude-dependent error induced from the correction algorithm 12, the effect of high total alkalinity caused by river water in the Arctic Ocean 13, and the time change of the magnitude of the correction due to the effect of ocean acidification 14. In addition, ambiguity of the certified salinity value (☐.001 g/kg) of the International Association of the Physical Sciences of the Ocean (IAPSO) Standard Seawater (SSW) (Ocean Scientific International Ltd., Havant, UK) used to calibrate laboratory salinometers is also a serious problem 9 that results from the lack of traceability to the International System of Units (SI) 10. This means that the spatial resolution of the salinity measurement is 20 times coarser than that of the temperature measurement. However, the resolutions of temperature and salinity measurements by the conductivity–temperature–depth (CTD) system (SBE 9 plus, Sea-Bird Scientific, Bellevue, Washington), which is widely used for high-quality measurements 8, are 0.2 mK and 0.0004 g/kg, respectively. At present, however, even the highest possible quality salinity measurements (uncertainty of about 0.001 g/kg) are not adequate for climate studies in the deep ocean, except for regions close to the sources of deep water 5, 6.įor example, in the western North Pacific along 149☎, the meridional gradients of temperature and salinity in the deep ocean are about 2 mK and 0.0002 g/kg per 100 km, respectively 7. Ocean salinity is also being recognized as an important indicator of climate change Antarctic ice-sheet melting is freshening the bottom water around Antarctica 4. A supercomputer simulation has shown that surface warming events in the Southern Ocean may cause significant temperature changes in the North Pacific deep water 3. ![]() Recent high-quality hydrographic observations have revealed bottom water warming: 2 mK decade −1 in the North Pacific 1 and around 30 mK decade −1 in the Southern Ocean 2. Surface water that cools around Antarctica sinks and forms bottom water, which spreads over the entire global ocean. The ocean’s central role in the climate system results from its great capacity to store and transport heat and water and exchange these with the atmosphere. Oceanic and atmospheric circulations transfer this energy from the low latitudes of Earth’s surface to higher latitudes. The Earth’s climate system is driven by energy from the sun. The ultra high-resolution density sensor will contribute notably to climate research at full ocean depth and measurement of seawater sampled from the deep ocean, to research on metrology to establish the traceability of salinity measurements, and to submarine resource exploration to detect spatial changes in the absolute salinity anomaly by combining with conventional conductance-based salinity measurements. These resolution values are the best in the history of seawater density measurements. The resolution of the density sensor is 0.00006 kg/m 3 for changing temperature at constant salinity and pressure, 0.00012 kg/m 3 for changing salinity at constant temperature and pressure, and 0.00010 kg/m 3 for changing pressure at constant temperature and salinity. We developed a state-of-the-art density sensor for seawater measurements based on measuring the refractive index by the interference method. The interference method is one of the most sensitive methods for measuring the refractive index of seawater. ![]() ![]() ![]() He said: "In reality, I've never been in a position to see these amazing birds in the wild. ![]() He hopes the interest in Abou will raise awareness of the threats these species are facing around the world. The shoebill is also an extremely silent and still bird, which also makes both hunting and staying away from people really easy, but when they actually DO make a sound, it sounds like a literal machine gun. It can also just bludgeon an animal to death with it’s beak and sometimes they like to do that with baby crocodiles. Many birds will typically flock together in order to overcome their individual weaknesses, but the shoe bill doesn’t have that problem at all. The reason we didn’t have much knowledge of the shoebill is because it likes to live in complete solitude. Ancient Arabs referred to the shoebill as Abu-Markhub (father of the slipper) in reference to it’s giant beak. Ancient Arabs and Egyptians had references to the shoebill but beyond that there were uncatalogued by most societies. Instead there are many rests, which sit like black, sinister birds on the lines of the music, signs signifying a silence which takes the breath away.” The music commentator, David Ewen wrote, “There is perhaps nothing in all concerto literature to match the kind of philosophic dialogue that takes place for some seventy measures.” The German pianist, Wilhelm Kempff, observed, “On the two pages of full score which this movement occupies, there are few notes. Over the tragic final chord, the solo piano reaches up in an arpeggio before falling back with three lamenting notes. As the dialogue unfolds, the two disparate voices seem to find common ground. In this drama there are two conversing “characters”-the quietly introspective solo piano and the gruff interjections of the strings. Strange allusions to operatic recitative may remind you of the final movement of the Ninth Symphony. It begins with a stern E minor announcement in the strings, set in austere octaves. In the brief second movement, the musical conversation takes a mysterious, even ominous turn. Notice the recurring “short-short-short-long” rhythmic motif which returns in Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. As the movement unfolds, the solo piano dances amid the orchestral lines with glistening splashes of color and exuberant embellishments. The orchestra answers, taking the conversation in a new and unexpected direction which opens the door to the real introduction. Instead of the customary extended orchestral introduction we would expect, for five serene bars the solo piano begins alone. In the opening of the first movement, we are drawn into the Concerto’s intimate world in a convention-defying way. Regarding the concert, the German music commentator Johann Friedrich Reichardt wrote, “There we sat, in the most bitter cold, from half past six until half past ten, and confirmed for ourselves the maxim that one may easily have too much of a good thing, still more of a powerful one.” Although a May, 1809 review called it “the most admirable, singular, artistic and complex Beethoven concerto ever,” the Fourth Concerto suffered neglect until 1836 when it was championed by Felix Mendelssohn. The under-rehearsed program included the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, the concert aria, Ah! perfido, excerpts from the Mass in C Major, and the Choral Fantasy , which fell apart and had to be restarted. ![]() It was part of a four-hour-long marathon concert which took place at the unheated Theater an der Wien during a particularly frigid cold snap in Vienna. ![]() ![]() The public premiere of Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto on Decemwas decidedly inauspicious.
